A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone hi-tech, Real Steel, stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goya) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

4.5 out of 10 Did I miss something?
Lorraine from Carlow, 29 Mar 2012
The fairly average/negative reviews for this film made me add it to my rental queue with a fair bit of trepidation, but very glad I did. A very pleasant surprise and not really what I was expecting, in a good way, which is maybe why reviewers haven't universally embraced it. Perhaps people were expecting something it isn't. I just don't see what's not to love. As a boxing film alone I think it does a better job than the much more highly acclaimed Warrior and The Fighter offerings or recent times and, frankly, (and this is saying something considering this is a film about fighting robots) it's actually more believable. OK, I realise The Fighter is based on a true story, but Bale is so larger than

The only way this movie could have been better is if I was 10 years old again!! Somewhat cheesy in parts, (the relationships!) but really engaging great for all the family, great effects great action movie.

3.5 out of 10 The Underdog
Kieran from Dublin, 11 May 2012
Fantastic Film and well worth a watch. Slow to get into the film and start very frustrating to watch. But this film concludes that the underdog can always be a competitor.

Eamon from Meath, 30 Apr 2012
Light enough piece of fluff. Enjoyable but about 30 mins longer than needed.
