Sergio Leone's monumental epic 'Once Upon A Time In The West' ranks among the five or six all-time Western masterpieces. The picture itself is as big as its Monument Valley locations, as grand as its fine, distinguished cast. Henry Fonda plays the blackest character of his long career. He's Frank, the ruthless, murderous psychopath who suffers conscience pangs after annihilating an entire family. Jason Robards is the half-breed falsely accused of the terrible slaughter. Charles Bronson plays the harmonica playing man who remembers how his brother was savagely tortured. Brilliantly directed by Leone and accompanied by one of Ennio Morriconne's greatest scores, this glorious picture helped re-establish the Western's significance. Watch out for that lengthy opening titles sequence...

4.5 out of 10 'Once Upon A Time In The West'
Paul from Laois, 22 Feb 2008
Excellent movie....old but still brilliant. This and "Unforgiven" are the best western cowboy movies ever made I think. Slow paced and atmospheric. Bronson is the the cool, mysterious loner on a mission of revenge. Great characters. Fonda plays the brutal and callous killer. This is better even than the classic Sergio Leone trilogy with Clint Eastwood. The mouth organ and dialogue have been sampled by many bands in their music since (ie Colourbox). If you love Westerns this is THE movie for you.

4 out of 10 Leone classic
Philip from Dublin, 30 Jun 2009
A great western from Sergio Leone, worth getting for the famous opening sequence alone. For me, its not his greatest - its a little too long and Charles Bronson just isn't as good as Clint Eastwood as his 'hero'. But Henry Fonda is surprisingly good playing against type as the bad guy. It works as a great allegory for the greed that fueled the opening up of the west.

4 out of 10 The Classic Western
Liam from Kilkenny, 20 Oct 2010
If you don't like westerns give this a miss. Kate hated it and fell asleep but then she hates westerns. Personally, I loved it. Not quite up to "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" trilogy I thought but almost. It gets to grips with the almost amoral, leaden-hearted killer instinct well.

4 out of 10 One of the great westerns
Eamon from Meath, 23 Jun 2011
This film is so much about atmosphere. At 2 hours 38 it really is an epic, but it could have been told in about an hour. That said, it is so worth the long lingering shots of the faces of the main protagonists that stretch into minutes. Glorious stuff.

I'm not a huge fan of westerns but this is a stunning movie, spectacularly shot. Its not a blockbuster and has a slow pace but its a cracker.
