Inside Deep Throat

It was filmed in 6 days for 25 thousand dollars. The government didn't want you to see it. It was banned in 23 states. It has grossed over 600 million dollars. And it is the most profitable film in motion picture history. More than 30 years after Deep Throat's provocative debut, this documentary examines the legacy that the most profitable film of all-time left on society. Whilst films by the likes of Russ Meyer featured scenes of nudity, it was not until Deep Throat, along with stars Harry Reems and Linda Lovelace, that hardcore was brought to a mass audience. Banned in 23 US States, the film sent shockwaves through American society with cinemas raided and prosecutions for obscenity issued. Such acts merely fuelled the fire of popularity and, released at the very moment when the nation's movements for sexual liberation, equal rights and counter-cultural values were reaching a fever pitch, the sexual explicitness of Deep Throat became the flashpoint for an unprecedented social and political firestorm. Sitting in front of Bailey and Barbato's probing lens is a parade of larger-than-life personalities that includes not only some of the filmmakers and stars of Deep Throat - director Gerard Damiano (a.k.a. Jerry Gerard), production manager Ron Wertheim and assistant cameraman turned leading man Harry Reems - but also an array of esteemed authors, filmmakers, opinion-makers and idealogues representing virtually every side of the sexual revolution and battle for First Amendment rights including Alan Dershowitz, Gore Vidal, John Waters, Norman Mailer, Erica Jong, Camille
