"Best Sci-Fi Movies"
Collection
- (
32 titles
)
The sci-fi genre produces more duds than most but when one rises above that mediocrity, it often becomes an instant classic. Cameron invented the space marine genre with Aliens, Carpenter delivered arguably his best with The Thing and the Wachowski brothers may never make an action title as good as The Matrix again. Big special effects and even bigger ideas are the touchstones of sci-fi cinema and you'll find some true classics in this list.
2001: A Space Odyssey
(1968)
A four-million-year-old black monolith is discovered on the moon, and the government sends a team of scientists on a fact-finding mission while hiding the truth from the public. Later, another team is sent to Jupiter in a ship controlled by the perfect HAL 9000 computer to further investigate the giant
A Clockwork Orange
(1971)
From its opening shot of Malcolm McDowell staring with evil intent directly into the camera (which pulls back to reveal him drinking a glass of milk), Stanley Kubrick's brilliant CLOCKWORK ORANGE announces itself as a completely new kind of viewing experience. Banned in Britain for decades, the film,
Abyss, The
(1989)

One diver (Ed Harris) soon finds himself on a spectacular
Akira
(1988)
In 1988, the landmark Anime film Akira, by director Katsuhiro Otomo, defined the cutting edge of Anime around the world. Alien
(1979)
Director Ridley Scott's breakthough film, an immensely successful blend of horror and science fiction, is a classic in both genres and spawned a host of sequels and imitators. Starring Sigourney Weaver as warrant officer Ellen Ripley, ALIEN focuses on the crew of the space cargo ship Nostromo, which
Aliens
(1986)
In this action-packed sequel to Alien, Sigourney Weaver returns as Ripley, the only survivor from mankind’s first encounter with the monstrous Alien. Back To The Future

Brazil
(1985)
BRAZIL is Terry Gilliam's masterpiece. The film, cowritten by Gilliam, playwright Tom Stoppard, and Charles McKeown, is set in a futuristic society laden with red tape and bureaucracy. Dune

David Lynch wades through dark waters in his adaptation of Frank Herbert's cult science fiction novel. E T The Extra Terrestrial
(1982)
E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL is Steven Spielberg's warmhearted classic delight for both children and adults. It tells the story of an alien creature, E.T., mistakenly left behind on Earth.
